Every day we receive spam emails from strangers. Who are these people that try to deceive us? In SAKAWA, Belgian-Ghanaian director Ben Asamoah shows us three youngsters from Ghana who, turn to internet scamming with the help of black magic. What is viewed in the West as fraud, is seen by the boys practising Sakawa as the exploitation of available resources. These resources come to them in the form of electronic waste.

Ben Asamoah
Ben Asamoah (*1985 in Agona Swedru, Ghana). His mother Dinah migrated with him to the Netherlands when he was 3. After two years of asylum seeking, they eventually gained citizenship in Belgium, where Ben went to school. At the Royal Institute for Theatre, Cinema and Sound (RITSC), Ben made a short documentary called ‘Black’, about the Western meaning of the colour black and ‘The Rice Farmers’ about the daily life of rice farmers in Ghana. ‘Sakawa’ is Ben’s first feature documentary.
